Used Car Review BMW X6 2008 2015

This unique vehicle had everyone look at it when it was new. Myk Belmonte dishes everything here.

2008-2015 BMW X6

History
We know the story of BMW going into the sport utility market, especially it was a bold move for someone who is specializes in driver eccentric sedans and sports cars. Making a differentiation by calling these as Sports Activity Vehicles, the Munich based maker had a cash cow. The X5 was first launched, with other smaller SUVs in the X-family that followed such as the smaller X3 and X1 while producing niche models like the X6. Unlike other BMW vehicles, all SUV models are assembled in Greer, South Carolina for worldwide consumption.

Priced above the X5, the X6 combines the ability of a sports utility vehicle while carrying the stance of a coupe. Development started in 2003 under the helm of Peter Tuennermann, fresh from his E70 X5 (second generation model) development two years prior, with design wo rk done in 2005 by Pierre Leclercq, testing done sometime between 2005 to 2006 and production commenced in December 2007. If there is one car which gave way to placing niche vehicles in BMWs line-up, this is the one especially models that fill between one another existed and Mercedes Benz is also doing the same way nowadays.

BMW Philippines brought in the X6, the third member of the X-family, back in 2008 which was a time where fuel prices hit an all time high. Three models were made available for Filipino consumers: a 3.0 diesel, a 3.0 gasoline, and a 4.4 V8 gasoline plus an X6M was added in 2011 with the inauguration of the M certified dealer in the country.

Value and Costs
This niche filling model can cost you between P2,800,000 to P5,000,000, depending on the overall condition and mileage of the vehicle. If you aim for this vehicle, practicality be damned which is offered by the X5, get the 3.0 diesel since most units sold had this one. And whil e youre at it, we recommend checking out BMWs certified pre-owned selection since these are certified and inspected.

With this vehicle being a low volume seller (at least, among BMW models), not much problems are reported by owners, at least in a serious level. Still, pay attention to the electronic gadgets this vehicle possesses since get one in poor shape and all headaches will follow. Since its engines are shared with other Bimmer SAVs, parts in this aspect are common.

Exterior and Interior
Staring at this vehicle for a long period of time, the X6 looks like a raised 4-door coupe in the vein of Mercedes Benz CLS Class since the swoopy styling goes better in a sports sedan and the chunkiness at the back does not befit this vehicle. Adding two types of vehicles in one body is a bold movement, however the output is somewhat less than what is desired. Never-mind the last sentence, it does have that presence that will make you stare.

The co upe styling will have an effect inside the vehicle, in which the front occupants will benefit from more headroom against those at the back since the sportier appearance gives them a limited space for their heads. Cargo carrying will be a hassle for taller items no thanks to the outside appearance, plus the vehicle is comfortable for four occupants so consider the fifth one to be short in stature. Thankfully, this vehicle gets a high quality interior and a motorized tailgate since reaching for it to close is difficult.

Engine
Three gasoline powerplants and a sole diesel engine comprise the X6 line-up. The most popular are diesels that includes the M57D30TU2 3.0 with 235hp at 4,000rpm and 520Nm at 2,000-2,750rpm sold in the earlier years and later ones receive the N57D30OL 3.0 that carries 241hp at 4,000rpm and 540Nm at 1,750-3,000rpm. If you are allergic to diesels then you have an option for a N54B30 3.0 which has 306hp at 5.800-6,200rpm and 400Nm at 1,300-5,0 00rpm if going with an early model and the later models get the N55B30 of the same displacement but pushes 302hp at 5,800rpm and 400Nm at 1,200-5,000rpm. Other insane petrol options that you can buy include the N63B44 4.4 V8 having 407hp at 5,500-6,400rpm and 600Nm at 1,800-4,500rpm and a S63B44 4.4 that is reserved for M models which gets 547hp at 6,000rpm and 680Nm at 1,500-5,650rpm. All of four engines are no slouch, but depending on what you expect these are solid performers especially that the V8 gives the M5 a run for its money.

Driving Impressions
Forget having other passengers inside the car, just buckle up and drive since the X6 has that handling carried from other BMWs and with this being a larger vehicle, it surprisingly handles well. The xDrive system puts most of the power in the rear axle but can supply to the front axle and go side to side when necessary.

Verdict
Going different is something of a hit or miss, but BMW hit t he right notes here. While the X6 is definitely a fun to drive beast, the limited practicality will turn off some. Being a niche car, this one is something nice if you are willing to live with its limitations.

The Good:
  • Unique concept
  • Strong engines
  • High quality interior
The Bad:
  • Exterior styling not for everyone
  • Limited practicality
  • Expensive
The Pick: 3.0d

SAE Congress Tidbit DCT Dual Clutch Transmission Issues in US

Listening to an SAE Congress panel discussion about future powertrains.

A question to the panel, regarding transmission, elicits an interesting comment on DCT (dual clutch or automated manual transmissions)

In the U.S., DCTs (e.g. Ford Focus) are not well liked because they have a less smooth low-speed and stop/start/creep performance compared to a traditional hydraulic torque converter equipped automatic.  In the U.S., customers are used to the very smooth performance of automatics, having mostly abandoned manual transmissions, so the jerky feel from DCTs is a big minus.  In Europe, most customers are coming from automatics, and are used to some clunkiness.

The industry hopes that customer acceptance in the US will increase as consumers become used to the feel of DCTs... but there is a real danger here to the technology, judging by the poor acceptance and near-demise of the CVT in the NA market.

Personally, I would nave no problem trading some clunkiness of a DCT for its advantages: fast shifts, full manual control, and no fluid to deal with.

Toyota Prado

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a model designation used in Japan, Australia, South Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia and Latin America as well as other parts of the world for light-duty, mid-sized four-wheel drive cars in the Toyota Land Cruiser line. They are produced by the Japanese car maker Toyota Motor Corporation. The car is marketed in many other parts of the developing world, such as the Caribbean and large parts of Africa.
In Europe it is sold as simply the Toyota Land Cruiser LC3, LC4 or LC5 (depending on the generation) or with the number series designation (LC 70, LC 90 and LC 120). In North America it is not part of the Land Cruiser range, being instead sold as the
Lexus GX 470, with nearly identical body panels and a V8 engine.
The current Prado is based on Toyotas J120 platform. Previous models were based on the J70 and J90 platforms. All models designated Prado feature front
independent suspension, ladder frame and a two-speed transfer case.
The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is available in GX, GXL and VX spec versions, with either short or long wheel base. The GX is the entry level model, while the VX is the more luxurious version. In most markets it is available with either a 4.0 L petrol V6 and a 3.0 L Diesel engine. In some European countries there are
commercial van variants, based on the short wheel base chassis

1955 BMW Isetta

BMW made the Isetta its own. They redesigned the powerplant around a more reliable BMW one-cylinder, four-stroke, 247 cc motorcycle engine making 13 hp. Although the major elements of the Italian design remained intact, BMW re-engineered much of the car, so much so that none of the parts between a BMW Isetta Moto Coupe and an Iso Isetta are interchangeable. The first BMW Isetta appeared in April, 1955.

BMW Isetta 250

While it retained the "Bubble Window" styling, it differed from the Italian model in that its headlamps were fixed separately to the sides of the bodywork and it carried the BMW badge below the windscreen. The car was also redesigned to take a modified version of the 250 cc 4-stroke engine from the BMW R25/3 motorcycle and the front suspension was changed. The single-cylinder generated 12 hp at 5800 rpm. The crankcase and cylinder were made of cast iron, the cylinder head of aluminium. However, the head was rotated by 180 degrees compared with the motorcycle engine. The twin-bearing crankshaft was also different in th e Isetta power unit, being larger and featuring reinforced bearings. One of the reasons for this was the heavy Dynastart unit which combined the dynamo and self-starter. The fuel mixture was provided by a Bing sliding throttle side draft motorcycle carburettor. In addition to further changes of detail, the BMW engineers enlarged the sump for installation in the car and cooled the engine by means of a radial fan and shrouded ducting.

The power train from the four-speed gearbox to the two rear wheels was also unusual: fixed to the gearbox output drive was something called a Hardy disc, which was a cardan joint made of rubber. On the other side of it was a cardan shaft, and finally a second Hardy disc, which in turn was located at the entrance to a chain case. A duplex chain running in an oil bath led finally to a rigid shaft, at each end of which were the two rear wheels. Thanks to this elaborate power transfer, the engine-gearbox unit was both free of tension and well soun dproofed in its linkage to the rear axle.

In Germany the Isetta could even be driven with a motorcycle licence. The top speed of the Isetta 250 was rated as 85 km/h.

The first BMW Isetta rolled off the line in April of 1955 and in the next eight months, some 10,000 of the "bubblecars" were produced.
BMW Isetta 300

In October 1956 the Isetta Moto Coupe DeLuxe (sliding-window Isetta) was introduced. The bubble windows were replaced by longer, sliding side windows. The engineers had enlarged the single cylinder to a 72 mm bore and 73 mm stroke, which gave a displacement of exactly 298 cc, and at the same time they raised the compression ratio from 6.8 to 7.0:1. In this way the engine now generated 13 hp (10 kW) at 5200 rpm, and the torque rose to 18.4 N·m at 4600 rpm. The maximum speed remained at 85 km/h, yet there was a marked increase in flexibility, chiefly noticeable on gradients.

In addition to the quest for better performance, there was another reason for the change: it was then still possible to drive the 250 cc Isetta with the old Class IV driving licence. Quite a number of Isettas were lovingly maintained by their owners for years and even decades, precisely because they possessed no other licence. On the other hand, from 1956 onwards, fi rst-time drivers had to pass the test for Class III if they wanted to drive a car. True, the Class IV licence continued to be issued, but it was only valid for small motorcycles.

A second, similar reason for fitting the larger engine was the prevailing tax regime. The 250 cc engine did not take full advantage of the tax class, which then went up to 300 cc.

BMW Isetta 600

The BMW 600 was intended as an enlarged Isetta three-wheeler with more power and a more conventional four-wheel configuration.

The front end of the 600 was virtually unchanged from the Isetta, but the 600s wheelbase was stretched to accommodate four seats. A conventional rear axle was added. BMW introduced the semi-trailing arm independent suspension on the 600. This suspension would be used on almost every new model for the next four decades. Because of extra size and weight, the 600 had a more powerful engine than the Isetta. The 600 had the 582 cc twin engine from the R67 motorcycle. Top speed was 64 mph.

In two years only 34,000 600s were produced, partly due to price competition with the entry-level VW Beetle. In the late 1950s consumers wanted cars that looked like cars, and they had lost interest in economy models. Sales of the 600 were, however, aided by the energy crisis of 1956â€"1957.

In May 1962 BMW ceased production of the Isetta. A total of 161,728 units had been built.

DODGE DURANGO (2005-2009)

The second generation model is more larger than the one it replaced which allowed a third row seat to reside in. From launch, a 4.7 V8 was the sole option while a 5.7 HEMI joined the line up later on. Equipment updates occurred in May 2007 and August 2008.

Bugatti Veyron Vitesse L’Or Rouge

At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Bugatti presented a unique model based on the Veyron Grand Sport called l’Or Blanc, basically meaning white gold. To this day, the unique porcelain-encrusted machine is one of the most beautiful versions famous hypercar ever made. And not surprisingly, more than a few customers demanded something similar.

About a month ago, this thing emerged on the scene, an undocumented but extremely sexy version of the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse called L’Or Rouge. As it turn out, there’s two of them, one in Shanghai, and another one in America, which was recently filmed at the Symbolic Motors Cars & Coffee event.

Instead of white, the color scheme uses red in combination with black, even on some of the details, like the inner door cards. It’s a dramatic look, worlds apart from the uncluttered style of the original Veyrons. Mind you, the technology on offer and the output of the engine have been updated as well. Vitesse models pack 1,200 hp instead of the usual 1,000 hp, which is why they also require larger air intakes for the dozen radiators.

Bugatti has uncharacteristically not issued an official press statement about this car, perhaps being too preoccupied with the Veyron’s successor. But it’s unlikely two customers living half a world apart chose to have the same color scheme on the same car.

Review Lemur BlueDriver

The Lemur BlueDriver is an OBD-II scan tool which uses your bluetooth enabled device (Android or iOS phone or tablet) as a display.  It has two components: a small dongle which attaches to your vehicles diagnostic port, and a free app which you download.

Setup was quick and painless.  I plugged the BlueDriver module into my cars diagnostic port.  The unit showed a blue LED, which indicates it has power and is searching for a blue tooth connection.  I opened the BlueDriver app on my phone, and it quickly found the module and paired with it.

To test the code reading and clearing functions, I opened my hood and disconnected the intake air temp sensor (IAT).  The engine stumbled and shook.  After a rough restart, the MIL came on.  After a s hort time, the Lemur app notified me that the MIL was on, and that there was one DTC.

However, when clicked on the code, it did not offer any details.  Instead, I had to purchase a "repair report", which unlocks more information about a problem than just the DTC number.  5 free repair reports come with the app; after that, you need to buy them at a cost of $0.99/5 reports.  I found this annoying.  If someone paid $100 for the tool, the trouble code details should come free.  On the other hand, once you have the DTC number, it is easy to search on the internet for detailed information.

It was easy to clear the MIL and code.

Lemur also comes with a basic display for OBD-II PIDs, which lets you chart in real time (well, about a 1s update frequency) a number of useful signals such as fuel trim, O2 sensor signals, etc. You can select which PIDs to show, and they are shown stacked  vertically on the screen in different colors. If you cick on one, you get a single large dial style display, which updates with the current value.

This is useful for basic troubleshooting, but it would have been nice to have more display options, for example raw values on a grid, or multiple signals on a single axis.  I also did not see any way to use a data logger type function, which would allow you to save and download long recordings of real time data.

Summary:

  • Plusses;
    • Easy to connect (important!)
    • Attractive, easy to use GUI
    • Unobtrusive (for most cars) dongle
  • Minuses:
    • Only basic PID display options
    • No recording / download function
    • Detailed repair reports are $0.99/5 after first 5 are consumed.

In conclusion, the Lemur BlueDriver is a solid tool for basic OBD-II diagnostic functions.  You are paying for solid hardware which will connect reliably with the Lemur app.  If you want a data recorder, customizable gauge displays, and other enhancements, you will need to use something like the Torque app, and one of the many OBD dongles which may or may not work properly with it.

Whatever tool you choose, some sort of OBD scanner is a must for any DIY mechanic.  Just one successful use will pay for the cost of the tool, when many dealers will charge a $75 or more diagnostic fee.

*Note:  Lemur provided me a free evaluation unit to review. No other compensatio n was received for this review.

THE RAILWAY ENGINEER

Valen Zhou on the ER, his second custom build on a 1986 Kawasaki 125cc
Last year I had the pleasure of introducing the work of photographer and custom bike builder Valen Zhou of Chengdu, China to a global audience; his work on the Monstub soon appeared in BikeExif and subsequently all over the Internet.  The Monstub was his first customized motorcycle, and indicated considerable talent in Valens hands.  Im happy to share his second custom motorcycle, which he calls the ER, which is an homage to hi s grandfather, a railway engineer, who helped raise Valen.  His absorption of the tools of his grandfathers trade into the very body of his latest motorcycle is a beautiful statement of Valens sincerity as a moto-artisan.
Valen Zhous ER on the freeways of Chengdu, China
Heres the story in his words (all photos courtesy Valen Zhou 2014):

"In October 2013, Valen Zhou from Chengdu, China, built his first custom motorcycle. The story of his motorcycle was published in The Vintagent shortly after; a lot of people wanted to know what he would do next. Valen has finally finished his second motorcycle, which is to honor his grandfather, which he calls “ER”â€"the engineer of the railway.
The fuel tank is handmade, and used a piston for a filler cap, with an external fuel level gauge, very much in the spirit of steam engines
Valen lost his grandfather (who was 86 years old) in 201 2; he grew up with him, and was proud he had such a cool grandfather, who was a railway and mechanical fuel technology engineer, working in the early 1950s, forming a new nation of Chinese industry. In those hard times, he was the one of engineers who built the four important railways in China. When he retired in 1986, Valen liked to sit next to his grandfather and watched him make toys. Valen says: “I still remember that time.” Valen liked bicycles so much, his grandfather said: “If you want one, just build it yourself,” and perhaps that’s why Valen likes doing things all by himself.
The secondary chain connects to a kickstart lever.  The rear subframe has been refabricated, although it retains a swingarm for comfort
After Valen’s grandfather passed away, his grandmother gave him a box, and she told him it was his grandfather’s treasure. His grandfather treated that box just like his own life. Valen opened the box; there were so many tools in it, some of them he was familiar with, but some of them he had never seen before. All of those tools were used by his grandfather when he worked on railways. Valen used these tools on his new motorcycle to show his respect to his grandfather. He felt his grandfather would be there with him when he rode his new motorcycle.
On of Valens grandfathers open-end wrenches serves as a brake lever
Valen totally rebuilt a 1987 Kawasaki 250 in a totally different manner from his previous machine, to be more efficient and practical and used his grandfather’s tools to make the motorcycle special. He used one of his grandfather’s screwdrivers instead of a gear lever, and he bent a wrench to use for the kickstand. He cut two fire extinguishers apart and put them together in another way to make an oil box. The handlebars were made at an angle so that he would feel more comfortable riding it. Valen was obsessed with these details, and spent whole nights sewing his seat and polishing his back drum. A motorcycle in the spirit of the railway .
From the side, the steep front forks and high handlebars look almost Speedway
Valen thought his second hand-made motorcycle would take three or four weeks to build, but there were many situations and inspirations he couldn’t figure out. He is so new to the world of motorcycles. Nevertheless, he finished it. After the Chinese New Year he will go to Italy, which is like a paradise to him. There are a lot of classic motorcycles from Italy, and he can find any type of motorcycle that he wants there. He will learn m ore skills about how to rebuild motorcycles so that he will make his work better."

Hyundai XG Generation 3 2003 2005

HYUNDAI XG (2003-2005)

Hyundais first foray (locally) in the mid-size sedan market which had a 2.5 V6 and a price tag similar to other V6 vehicles. It was not a success especially no one can phantom on buying an expensive Hyundai at that time.
